Same position. Fewer clicks.
If the summary above the results answered the question, the click never happened — and nothing in a rank tracker will ever explain it to you.
This is the most reported and least diagnosed pattern in search right now. Positions steady, impressions flat or up, clicks down. Nobody changed anything on your site and nobody outranked you.
What is actually happening
Search puts a composed summary above the results. If that summary satisfies the question, the reader stops. Your listing was still there, still in position, still counted as an impression — and nobody needed it.
Which means the loss is invisible to every instrument most businesses own. A rank tracker cannot see it because your rank did not change. Analytics cannot see it because the session never started.
How to confirm it is this and not something else
- Split your queries by whether they trigger an answer box. The drop should concentrate almost entirely in the ones that do.
- Check impressions. If impressions held and clicks fell, demand did not move — the destination did.
- Check which pages are cited inside the answer for those queries. If yours is not among them, you are supplying the position and somebody else is supplying the answer.
- Check informational versus commercial intent. Answer boxes take the informational questions first and hardest.
What to do about it
Two things, in order. First, find out whether the answer cites you: being cited inside the summary is the replacement for the click, and it is the only position on that surface worth holding. Second, shift effort toward the questions where a summary cannot finish the job — comparisons, decisions with trade-offs, anything where a reader needs more than a definition.
What does not work is trying to win the ranking harder. You already have the ranking.
The short answers
Why did my traffic drop when my rankings stayed the same?
Most often the answer box. If the summary above the results satisfies the question, the click never happens while your position and impressions are unchanged. A rank tracker cannot see the loss because nothing about your rank moved.
How do I confirm the answer box is the cause?
Split your queries by whether they trigger a summary; the drop should concentrate there. Then check impressions — if impressions held and clicks fell, demand did not move, the destination did.
How much traffic do AI Overviews take?
We will not quote a number, because every published figure is somebody else’s sample and we have not measured it ourselves. What we can say is which of your questions trigger a summary and whether that summary cites you.
Does being cited in the answer box replace the click?
Partly, and it is the only position on that surface worth holding. A citation puts your name inside the thing the reader actually consumes, which is where being absent costs you.
Should I stop doing SEO?
No. You still need the position to be eligible for the citation. What changes is that ranking is no longer sufficient on its own.
Which queries are safest from this?
Comparisons and decisions with real trade-offs. A summary can finish a definition; it cannot finish a choice, which is why those questions keep sending clicks.
