If it cannot describe you, it will not name you.
This is the cheapest advantage available to a small business and the one most consistently thrown away, because vague positioning is comfortable and specific positioning excludes people.
A composed answer names two to five businesses and gives each of them roughly one clause. That clause has to distinguish. If the only true short sentence about you is "a platform for modern teams", there is no clause to write, and the model will reach for a business it can describe instead.
The test
Write the sentence you want an assistant to say about you. Then check three things: does it name a category, does it name a specific case you are for, and could a stranger repeat it correctly after reading it once.
Most positioning fails the second. It says what the company does and not who it is obviously the right answer for, which is the part a recommendation needs.
Why small brands should be more specific, not less
A paragraph naming five general options has no room for a sixth general option. It will make room for the one that is clearly for a specific case, because that adds information rather than repeating it.
That is the structural advantage: specialisation buys a seat that scale cannot. In our own measurements the brands holding a category’s answers were consistently the most written-about and most clearly described, not the largest.
Where the description actually comes from
Not your homepage. From third-party sources paraphrasing your homepage. So the practical job is to make the sentence easy to copy: state it plainly, in the same words, in every profile, listing and description you control, so that everybody paraphrasing you paraphrases the same thing.
And make the name resolve
A brand appearing under several variants is counted and described as several entities. We have measured a business whose strongest recommendation in its own speciality never registered against its brand, because the answer used a different form of its name.
The short answers
How should I position a small brand for AI assistants?
Specifically. A composed answer gives each named business roughly one clause, and that clause has to distinguish. If your shortest true description does not name a category and a specific case you are for, there is nothing for the answer to carry.
Why does vague positioning fail here more than elsewhere?
Because a paragraph naming five general options has no room for a sixth. It will make room for a clear specialist, because that adds information instead of repeating it.
Do I have to exclude customers to be specific?
To some extent, which is why most companies avoid it. The trade is a seat in the answer that scale alone will not buy.
Where does the assistant get my description from?
Mostly from third-party sources paraphrasing you, not from your homepage directly. So state your sentence identically everywhere you control, and everybody paraphrasing you paraphrases the same thing.
Is being mentioned always good?
No. Being described as "also an option" is a mention that argues against you, and it is worse than absence because it occupies a slot without earning anything.
Does my brand name affect how I am described?
Yes, and it can erase you. A business appearing under several name variants is counted as several entities — we have measured one whose strongest recommendation never registered against its own brand.
