Writing
the answer box

Ranking gets you listed. Citation gets you read.

The summary is written from a handful of pages. Being one of them is a different job from ranking below it, and the page shape that wins is unusually specific.

A composed summary is assembled from pages the engine retrieved. Some of those pages are cited by name. Being one of them puts your brand inside the thing the reader actually consumes, which is the only position on this surface that survives the click disappearing.

What gets cited

  • Pages that answer the exact question in a self-contained passage, near the top, without preamble.
  • Pages that carry a specific fact — a number, a threshold, a date, a limit — rather than a description of a fact.
  • Pages that cover the whole question rather than a fifth of it. A roundup beats five single-vendor pages.
  • Pages with a clear structure the retriever can segment: a question as a heading, an answer under it.

That last one is why an FAQ block outperforms its length so consistently. The unit a model quotes is a question and its answer, not an article, and a page that is already in that shape needs no interpretation.

What does not get cited

Long preambles, brand narrative, and anything where the answer arrives in paragraph six. Also pages that hedge: a passage that refuses to commit gives a summary nothing to carry.

Write the answer first and the context after. It is the opposite of how most marketing pages are structured and it is the single cheapest change on this list.

The uncomfortable part

You are often competing with pages that compare you to other people. In one run we measured, the most-cited source in the category was a third-party roundup, cited 126 times, and no company website reached the top of that list. Being the best single-vendor page in a category can lose to being mentioned in the roundup.

How to check whether it is working

Track two things separately: whether a summary appears for the question at all, and whether your page is among its cited sources. They move independently, and a report that merges them will tell you nothing you can act on.

The short answers

How do I appear in an AI Overview?

By being one of the pages the summary is written from. That means self-contained passages that answer the exact question near the top, a specific fact rather than a description of one, and a structure the retriever can segment — a question as a heading with its answer underneath.

Is appearing in the answer box the same as ranking?

No. Ranking makes you eligible; citation puts your name inside what the reader consumes. They move independently and should be tracked separately.

Why do FAQ sections work so well for this?

Because the unit a model quotes is a question and its answer, not an article. A page already in that shape needs no interpretation to be used.

What stops a page being cited?

Preamble, brand narrative, and hedging. If the answer arrives in paragraph six there is nothing to lift, and a passage that refuses to commit gives the summary nothing to carry.

Should I write a roundup that includes competitors?

Often yes, and it is the uncomfortable answer. In one run we measured, the most-cited source in a category was a third-party roundup cited 126 times, while no company website reached the top of the list.

How long does it take to get cited?

It depends on how often the engine re-reads the page, which is not on your schedule. Measure monthly and track appearance and citation as two separate series.

Does schema markup help?

It helps the page be parsed correctly, which is worth doing, but it does not substitute for the passage being answerable. A well-marked-up page with no clear answer in it stays uncited.

Five real questions against a live answer engine with web search on, each asked ten times. That is fifty real calls, so the report lands in under ten minutes rather than while you wait. You see every question before anything runs, and you get the answer text, who got named and the sources the engine read, not a score.
